In Memory of Ben

Our dear Ben has lost his battle with cancer. In the last week, his health had quickly deteriorated and it was clear that he was ready. He passed quickly and peacefully, surrounded by those that love him.

Ben ~ wear your silver harness proudly, dear friend. Dance among the stars, free of pain. It was a privilege to care for you and an honor to know you. Until we meet again… ~ 3.29.2011

A MaPaw Pup Earns Her Silver Harness

Hello Puppers ~
It is with a very heavy heart and great sadness that I share the passing of Triska.

Triska joined her MaPaw foster home almost 2 years ago. Originally found as a stray, her past was a mystery. She was not quick to trust humans, but she quickly won the hearts of her foster family.

Shortly after joining her foster home, Triska suffered several seizures. Medications helped to regulate the seizures. It seemed as soon as the seizures were under control, she was diagnosed with Cushings Disease. The Cushings took far longer to find the medication that would work best for Triska. Her family was committed to making sure that Triska was safe and as healthy as she could be.

A short time ago, Triska was diagnosed with Degenerative Myelopathy which is a disease of the spinal cord. It’s a chronic disease that eventually results in paralysis.

On June 15th, Triska was unable to get up on her own and was clearly uncomfortable. A trip to the doctor confirmed our worst fears ~ there was nothing more that could be done for Triska.

Triska passed peacefully surrounded by love and showered by tears. She was a dear and very loved member of the MaPaw family.

Dearest Triska ~ Wear your silver harness proudly beautiful girl. Dance among the stars and run free of the pain that held you back. You are very missed by all who knew you. We mourn your passing, but celebrate the time we were lucky enough to spend with you.

Triska’s human Mum, Ann, shared this wonderful photo of them.

While we will never know her past, we know that Triska was a spoiled and loved member of a family that misses her terribly.

Kennel Update

Hello Puppers ~
We have some very exciting news to share about our kennel project…

Our first project of the Spring was to build the indoor kennel run walls. We decided to use cement block to build 6 foot walls and then finish the remainder of the wall with chain link to contain our little escape artists. After a couple of days of work, the cement portion of the walls was complete.

We had to take a little break to raise more money in order to continue construction. As we were strategizing our fundraising plan, we got an AMAZING email from the Petco Foundation. We had applied for a grant a few months ago and had been patiently waiting for word. Well, when we got the email we almost passed out. The Petco Foundation had awarded MaPaw a $20,000 grant to complete the construction of the kennel!!!

The check arrived on May 31st and we promptly started planning our work weekends.

This weekend, MaPaw volunteers were hard at work and we are ecstatic about the progress. Every weekend will be a work weekend until our kennels are finished. We can finally see the finish line and we can’t wait to welcome our first guest. If you’re available and would like to help, please contact us. The more help we have, the faster we can get the kennels finished.

Now that construction is rolling along, keep checking back for updates!

Her Name Was Sasha

Tuesday night (May 22nd) started off as a “typical” night at the MaPaw Farm. That was, until 10:15 that night…

The dogs had been fed and everyone was ready for bed. Suddenly, the MaPaw phone rang. On the other end of the line was a gentleman whose pup had been struck by a car. Sasha, a 2 1/2 year old Sibe had escaped and was hit by a car. Her family rushed her to emergency. When the vet was told that the family didn’t have money, the family was given MaPaw’s phone number and sent home with Sasha.

We could hear the sadness in her human’s voice and we just knew that we needed to help Sasha. We asked her family to drive her directly to Metropolitan Emergency and arrangements were made for Sasha to be admitted as a MaPaw pup. We had no idea how severe her injuries were or ~ we just knew that we needed to do all that we could to help her.

At 2 am on Wednesday morning, we received the first of many phone calls from doctors at Metropolitan. Unfortunately, it wasn’t good news. Her pelvis had multiple fractures on both sides. The doctor we spoke to thought that surgery would cost about $6000. We would have to wait for the surgeon to view her x-rays before we could know what our options were. We were assured that she was receiving pain medications and was resting comfortably.

Wednesday brought more phone calls to the hospital and finally in the afternoon, we were able to speak to the surgeon. The news was devastating. As we had already been told, Sasha had multiple fractures to both sides of her pelvis. In addition, her pelvis had been removed from her spine. We were told that it was a very risky surgery since they would need to operate so closely to the spine and there was a real possibility that Sasha could become paralyzed as a result. We were told that she had about a 70% chance of surviving. Not to mention the long and extremely painful rehabilitation she would need to endure.

As heartbreaking as it was, we needed to think about what was fair for Sasha. We couldn’t imagine asking her to go through the surgery and painful recovery without knowing if she would ever be able to run and play like a Sibe again. After speaking with Sasha’s family, we chose to help her begin her journey.

Her human Mum joined us at the hospital and held Sasha close as she closed her eyes and took her last breath.

Dearest Sasha ~ We wish we would have had the opportunity to meet you under very different circumstances. We hardly knew you, but you left a paw on our hearts. Wear your silver harness proudly as you dance among the stars. You are free from pain and can run once again. Many are waiting to greet you.

Jack

Age: 6 Years
Sex: Male
Size: Average

Congratulations Jack!!!

Jack is a very friendly six year old Siberian/Malamute full of love. Unfortunately due to life changes, Jack has found too much time on his paws and he is looking for a new relationship where he can spend more time with someone.

Jack just loves everyone he meets and he is great with kids of all ages. Jack is blind in one eye and has been treated by a canine ophthalmologist. He has glaucoma in his remaining eye, however, the specialist has indicated the remaining eye should be fine. He is currently on drops for both eyes.

Jack is a big teddy bear that loves big bones, car rides and walks. He is a smart boy, he knows “sit” and “down”. He is crate trained and is a fairly active boy. Everyone he meets is his new best friend. He just needs a family to call his own where he can be the spoiled pup he deserves.

If you have any questions about this wonderful guy or about his eye conditions, please feel free to contact us. He is indeed a very special boy that you will fall in love with.

Baron

Age: 3 Years
Sex: Male
Size: Average

Congratulations Baron!!!

Baron is a handsome three year old red and white Husky with a great personality! He has brilliant baby blue eyes that demand your attention along with a contagious Siberian smile. Baron’s previous family separated and we were contacted to provide immediate shelter for this handsome guy. We are so happy we were able to.

Baron is a social boy that loves all of the other dogs. He plays nicely with them and enjoys hanging out with them. His favorite past-time is getting close to his foster people and snuggling in for some quality time. This boy is a cuddler! He bonds very quickly and loves to join in any project at hand. He is a great supervisor and loves to talk and assist.

Baron is housebroken, crate trained and trustworthy in the house. He is a couch potato at times and loves to be on the couch or bed if allowed. He enjoys car rides and is good on a leash (for a husky). Baron is a good natured boy that will make a wonderful addition to a lucky home.

MaPaw Welcomes 3 New Boys

Hello Puppers ~
On May 13th, Mobi joined his MaPaw foster home. He had been found as a stray and became a guest of our local shelter. This pup took over the least coveted spot of “heaviest MaPaw pup” by beating the previous holder of that title (Trudi) by 3 pounds. This big guy weighed in at 110 pounds!

A trip to the vet and blood tests revealed that Mobi is hypothyroid. Now that he’s on medication and a healthy diet, we’re hoping that he’ll be able to shed those unwanted pounds. Mobi is lucky enough to have canine housemates that will keep him active in his quest to become a healthier weight. This poor guy can barely get up on the sofa…

Once Mobi gets to a healthier weight, he’ll be able to begin his search for a forever family.

The next pup to join us was Baron. This handsome red and white pup is just 3 years old. He came to us because his family was splitting up and nobody wanted him. We still can’t understand why. He is one of the sweetest pups we have ever met.

One of the first orders of business was to get this young man neutered and boy is it a good thing we did. Immediately following the surgery, the doctor called us. One of Baron’s testicles was very hard, which concerned him so he wanted to send a biopsy out for testing. Test results showed that the testicle had contained cancer. The good news is that when his testicle was removed, the cancer was completely contained and was no longer an issue.

Baron is getting along well with his canine housemates, enjoying games of chase in the yard. He also enjoys quality time with the humans in his foster home.

Now that we know Baron is healthy, we can focus on finding Baron his forever family. His bio should be up on our site in the next couple of days.

The third pup that joined MaPaw is Foxer. Foxer is a 10 year old Husky mix (maybe Collie?) that found himself at a local shelter when his guardian could no longer care for him. Sadly, this poor guy kept getting passed by because of his age and the shelter became overcrowded. We happily welcomed Foxer to the Farm.

He has settled into the routine at the Farm. Foxer is doing well with the other pups and enjoys the company of his human caretakers.

We are very happy to welcome these 3 boys into the MaPaw family! They are such wonderful pups and deserve a chance to find their forever families that will love and spoil them for the rest of their lives.

If you would like to learn more about Mobi, Baron or Foxer, please email us. We would love to share more as we learn about them.

Cody

Age: 4 Years
Sex: Male
Size: Average

Courtesy Post for Main Line Animal Rescue – Adopted!!!

Cody is a beautiful white husky with golden almond eyes. He is very energetic and needs to be with people who can spend time with him running off his excess energy and provide proper training to improve his manners.

Cody has a great personality and plays very nicely with dogs (his size or larger) in play-group. He plays in typical northern breed fashion. Due to his energy, Cody would do best in a home with older children.

Do you need more fresh air and exercise? Cody could be the pup you are looking for!

Please contact Main Line Animal Rescue directly if you are interested in adopting Cody.

Catching Up

Hello Puppers ~
It’s been a busy week again at MaPaw. We’ve had some new pups join MaPaw and we’ve had a lucky pup go to his new home.

First new pup is Ice. Ice is a beautiful pie-bald gal who is approximately 18 months old. She was surrendered to the shelter by her owners because she kept getting out. Since she was labeled an “escape artist”, our friends at the shelter felt it would be in Ice’s best interest to be adopted through MaPaw. She has a wonderful personality and LOVES playing with the other pups in her foster home. Ice is looking for a home with a 6 foot fence and another pup (her size or larger) as active as she is.

Next gal to join us was Aurora. This pup was found as a stray. We can’t believe that nobody is missing her ~ she is such a great pup! She is estimated to be 4 years old. Aurora enjoys the company of other dogs, but would do fine as an only dog as well. She is quite vocal and doesn’t mind telling you what she’s thinking.

Just two days after Aurora joined MaPaw, Clint followed. He had been surrendered by his owners when they could no longer afford to care for him. At 8 1/2 years, our friends at the shelter didn’t think his chances of being adopted were very good. We happily made space for Clint and soon he was making himself comfortable in his foster home. Clint prefers the company of ladies (pups), however, he would also do well as an only pup.

We’ve also added two pups to our Available Dogs page that are not with MaPaw, but are searching for their forever homes.

Jaycee is currently residing with York County SPCA. This beautiful Husky mix was caught in a leg trap. Sadly, her leg could not be saved, but that doesn’t slow her down at all. She absolutely adores people and spending time with them. Jaycee does prefer to be the only pup in the house. If you are looking for a great friend to spend your time with, Jaycee could be your gal!

Cody is a 4 year old male Siberian Husky with an amazing white coat and golden almond eyes. He is currently a resident of Main Line Animal Rescue, where he has been since January. Cody does have a lot of energy and is looking for an active home with a Sibe-savvy family. If you are looking for a great running companion, contact MLAR about Cody today!

Our lucky boy is Stryker. Stryker had been surrendered to the shelter with a history of seizures. Stryker is everyone’s friend ~ people and pups (his size or larger) alike. He enjoys a game of chase in the yard before settling for a snuggle with his humans. Stryker met his new brother and family last weekend. The two were great friends and arrangements were made for Stryker to go home this weekend. When volunteers, Linda and Pete, came to the Farm to pick Stryker up for the road trip, Stryker couldn’t stop hopping around. He was so excited to be going home, he couldn’t contain himself.

Stryker was adopted on May 5th.

Welcome to our new pups! Congratulations to Stryker and his new family!
