Hello Puppers ~

This weekend, MaPaw welcomed another pup into the family. Our newest member is a blue-eyed beauty named Shelby. This sweet girl has been bounced around a lot already in her short life due to her misunderstood Husky ways. Luckily, she found her way to MaPaw where we’re used to the mischief Huskies can get into.

At 13 months, Shelby is full of puppy energy and will need some training and guidance along the way.

On Saturday, some of our MaPaw pups hung out at Cutter’s Mill in Chalfont, PA to strut their stuff and meet some people. Nika, Matrix and Van did a fabulous job of representing MaPaw and had a great time doing it!

Very exciting news tonight…

I would like to introduce the newest members of the MaPaw family.

Nika is a sweet little girl that was originally found as a stray. She was adopted by a family, but was unfortunately brought back to the shelter when it was discovered that a family member was allergic. Luckily she’s with us now and we are sure that she will soon find her furever home. She is getting along great with the dogs in her foster home and is playing non-stop!

Matrix, aka Clown Face, was picked up as a stray and found himself at the same shelter as Nika. We are guessing he’s around a year old. He is full of puppy energy and loves to play with the other pups in his foster home. He loves to snuggle and give his foster Mum husky kisses.

He’s Kenya ~ our 3-pawed pup.

Ya know ~ we just can’t figure out why this guy is still searching for his furever home. He plays well with the other huskies in his foster home, but prefers people attention more. He doesn’t jump up on people or counter surf (like many huskies love to do). He enjoys going for walks or runs with his foster Mum, but tires faster than his 4 pawed friends.

The vet seems to think that Kenya was born with only 3 paws. He gets around well and people can’t believe how fast he can run!!

Ask any rescue and they’ll tell you that their most important asset is their network of foster homes. MaPaw is no different…..

Many times MaPaw is a dog’s last option. We never like to say no, but the unfortunate truth is that sometimes there are just no open foster homes. It is the most difficult thing to say no when you know that you are the dog’s last hope for a second chance. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been in rescue ~ 1 day, 3 months, 20 years ~ it NEVER gets easier to say no to a dog. A dog that has been a loyal companion to his family for 10 years and then suddenly finds himself abandoned at the shelter with no idea why he’s there and why they aren’t coming back for him. A dog that is tied out with no human interaction, no shelter and limited food and water for his whole short life and just needs some time to learn how to be part of a family. A dog that was used as a breeder and taken to the shelter when she could no longer produce litters.

Maybe you’re wondering why I’m writing about foster homes. The simple answer is that our foster homes are a huge part of why we are able to do what we do. Truth is ~ if it wasn’t for my foster home I don’t know where I would be. You see I was picked up running down the side of a road and once nobody came forward to take me home, MaPaw was contacted. Luckily, there was an open foster home and I moved right in. I was lucky that I didn’t have to spend a long time in the shelter, but I can tell you it was definitely long enough!

Maybe you’re saying, “Chloe ~ what do foster homes do?”. Foster homes open their home to a pup in need. Some pups might need help learning their basic manners (sit, down, etc.). Some pups need help with their house training. Some pups are already crate trained, while others may need help learning about the crate. Some pups come into their foster home and just need love. Not all of our pups are from the shelter, owners do contact MaPaw directly to get help for their pup. Some pups stay only a short time before they find their furever homes, while others are longer term fosters.

Now you’re probably saying, “Chloe ~ what happens if I do foster and I just can’t let my foster dog go?”. That happens. Some of our foster homes have actually failed Fostering 101, which is what we call it when a foster home adopts their foster dog. Sometimes it means we lose a foster home, but that’s okay cause we know that another one of our pups found a great home!

I’ve been involved in rescue since 2001 and I was my Mum’s second foster dog. My Mum failed one other time and that’s where I got my brother, Scout. We’ve had a couple of other pups stay for a little bit while they waited for a foster home to open up. I have to say that it feels pretty good to help a dog that is in the same situation that Scout and I were both in before we came to MaPaw.

My big brother, Niko, was very close to dying before his foster Mum stepped in and took him from the shelter. You see Niko’s leg had been broken and was severely infected. He probably wouldn’t have survived at the shelter much longer. His foster Mum took him straight to the vet where he had his front leg amputated. That was 8 years ago. Today he is a happy pup that spends most of his day napping on his bed.

If one of our foster homes hadn’t stepped forward for poor Buster, I don’t want to think what would have happened to him. He had already been at the shelter for a month and nobody even looked at him. He had been with his family for his entire life ~ 10 years. Now he is resting comfortably at his foster home on a comfy bed that soothes his old bones.

Both Halo and Timber had been picked up as strays and the shelter was overflowing. We had only 4 hours to find foster homes for both of them and we were ecstatic when two of our foster homes stepped forward. Halo has been adopted to a wonderful family where he will be loved and spoiled for the rest of his life. Timber is in a great foster home and is waiting to find his furever home.

Spencer had been a junkyard dog that was underweight, filthy and had a horrible haircut because he was so matted when he was removed by the authorities. Thanks to his foster family, Spencer has a clean, healthy coat and is finally part of a family! He so deserves to find a furever family and he is patiently waiting.

Tundra, Dakota and Gabe were removed from a home along with six other Siberians because of neglect. They were timid and afraid of human contact. Tundra was the quickest to recover and has now found his furever home where he is part of a family that adores him. Gabe was adopted by his foster family and is making progress every day. Dakota has come so far since first joining MaPaw. He is currently looking for that special home that understands him and his needs.

I could go on and on, but I think you get my point. We have an incredible group of foster homes, but we can always use more. The more foster homes we have ~ the more pups we can help.

It’s hard to believe that this handsome fellow….

was this shy and underweight pup…..

Spencer joined MaPaw in April. He had been removed from a junkyard where he had been chained for most of his short life with no food, no water and no shelter. He was so dirty and matted that he had to be shaved. He was so shy and we thought that it would take Spencer a long time to learn to trust humans again.

When he first got to his foster home, he was quite shy and tentative. He soon got comfortable with his new surroundings and really started to come out of his shell!

We estimate Spencer is around 1 – 2 years old. He has a sweet, laid-back personality and loves human companionship.

We are so proud of Spencer and know that he is now ready for his furever home!!

Good evening Puppers ~
It was another busy weekend for MaPaw and lots of good news!!

Let’s see ~ where should I start?

Well, I’ll start with Blitz’s story. Blitz has been with us for a while now, which kinda surprised all of us since he was such a cool, young pup. Now we know it was just because his perfect home was waiting for him. Saturday morning, Blitz’s foster Mom packed up the car and they started their 3 hour journey (along with his foster Mom’s friend) to meet his new family.

Blitz was so excited, he couldn’t contain himself. In fact, he shredded the quilt that was in his crate!! We are told that this quilt had been on many adoptions…unfortunately, it saw its last adoption. So sorry quilt…..

The long ride was definitely worth it. Blitz met his new sibelings ~ Freddie (a MaPaw alum) and Soco. The 3 of them played and played. Christine and Todd could only hold them still long enough to take this photo before they were off and running again!

Not to worry ~ the other pups in Blitz’s foster home didn’t have to wait long until they had a new foster sibeling (but more on that later).

About the same time that Blitz was meeting his new family, Ray was also meeting his new family. Ray now has a new Husky sister named Daisy. We are told that Ray is settling in nicely at his furever home.

Once Ray’s foster Mom and Dad were sure he was comfortable, they said their goodbyes and jumped in the car. However, they weren’t on their way home. No, they were on their way to the shelter to spring a young pup who had been patiently waiting for us to have an available spot open up. Weston was so happy to be out of the shelter. In fact, he didn’t even mind the bath. Apparently he’s not a big fan of being clean since as soon as he was done, he ran to the nearest patch of dirt to make sure he wasn’t too clean.

On Sunday, Blitz’s former foster Mom welcomed Kye. Kye had actually been pulled from the shelter a week ago, but had been waiting at a temporary foster home until another foster home opened up (Thanks Deb!). Kye is settling into his foster home and getting along great with the other pups.

We are so happy for Blitz and Ray ~ both of these boys have been very patiently waiting for their turns to be adopted. We can’t wait for photos and updates.

and tears in our eyes, we share some very sad news. MaPaw has lost a family member.

Dunkin had come to MaPaw as a stray. He was such a sweet and gentle soul who loved everyone he met. He made visits to nursing homes and brought a smile to all.

While Dunkin was only with his family for a short time, they gave him a lifetime of love. We know they miss him so much and our thoughts are with them.

Sweet Dunkin ~ wear your silver harness proudly as you dance North of the Rainbow Bridge. You are now free of the pain that held you back.
