Halo’s Miracle Happy Tail

The shelter was overflowing and they needed an answer immediately. MaPaw only had 4 hours to find a foster home for this handsome boy. Luckily, one of our foster homes stepped forward and agreed to foster him. Even though she already had 2 foster dogs, she just couldn’t let him miss his second chance.

Look at those beautiful blue eyes! It’s not surprising that Halo didn’t stay with MaPaw for very long before finding his furever home.

He’s settled into his new home and is happily being spoiled.

Congrats to Halo!

Don’t miss Hike N Howl on Saturday, October 10th in Tyler State Park from 10 am – 3 pm! There’s going to be lots of fun things to do and plenty of cool dogs to meet!!

Tyco’s Happy Tail

When MaPaw first found out about Tyco, he had just been returned to the shelter by the family that had adopted him 6 months earlier. Without explanation, they brought Tyco back severely underweight. The shelter environment was too stressful for poor Tyco and his caretakers noticed that the poor boy seemed more depressed as each day passed.

We couldn’t wait to get this handsome boy with the sad brown eyes into rescue and back on the road to recovery. Unfortunately, during his first routine visit to the rescue vet, it was discovered that he was also heartworm positive. Before we could even consider the heartworm treatment, Tyco needed to gain some weight so that his body could tolerate it.

Here’s a photo of Tyco shortly after he joined MaPaw.

Under the care of his foster Mum and Dad, Tyco soon gained enough weight to undergo treatment. Three months later, Tyco had successfully completed treatment and gained back his confidence. When he was ready to find his furever home, we posted his story on this blog and highlighted him on MaPaw’s site. Much to our delight, Alicia had been keeping an eye on Tyco’s status waiting for him to be ready for adoption. At his first meet and greet, Alicia and Mike were there to meet Tyco and fell in love. Soon after, Tyco found his furever home with them and he’s so loving family life!!

We just love happy tails!

Join us on October 10th in Tyler State Park for the 3rd annual Hike N Howl where we hope our wonderful pups find their own happy tails!

A Happy Tail ~ Meet Niko…

In honor of Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month, I am going to post a happy tail every day of October! I thought the best way to start would be to introduce you to my big brother, Niko.

MaPaw first found out about him when a shelter contacted one of our members about him. He had been at the shelter for a couple of days, but they had been trying to catch him for over a week. The shelter had received reports that a Husky had been hit by a car and was limping. When they finally caught him, his front leg was indeed broken and was infected. Even though they had taken him to the vet and had him on antibiotics, there seemed to be no improvement. His owners were contacted and they signed him over to the shelter. The infection worsened and the shelter soon decided that rescue was his last option.

He was quickly picked up by MaPaw and rushed to the vet where it was determined that his leg needed to be amputated in order to save his life. His surgery was done a couple days before Christmas and shortly after he was hopping around the yard, happy to be free of the painful infection that had been poisoning his body.

About a month later, my Mum adopted him.

That was 8 years ago and Niko is now 10 years old. He sometimes trips and falls, but he picks himself right back up and keeps going. He’s an awesome brother and I’m glad that MaPaw gave him the 2nd chance that he deserved!

If you’d like to share your shelter/rescue dog happy tail with us, please contact us and we’d love to post it!

BTW – Hike N Howl 2009 is just 8 days away! Join us on October 10th in Tyler State Park for a fun-filled day in the Autumn sun!

Guess Who Got Adopted….

Our handsome redhead, Dakota has found his furever home!!!

Dakota is a very special boy and he has waited a long time to find the perfect home. He needed to find a family that understood his shyness and was ready to help Dakota come out of his shell once he settled into his new home. Luckily for him, the wait paid off!

We are so grateful to Janet and her family for giving Dakota the chance to be a part of their family. We have already received a couple updates from his new family and he’s doing well. His new family realizes that it will take Dakota time to get totally comfortable with his new surroundings and they are giving him the space and encouragement he needs.

We are so proud of Dakota! He has certainly come a long way since we first met him. We know that he will continue to grow with his furever family. We look forward to more updates!! Congrats to Dakota!!

Hello Puppers ~

Meet MaPaw’s newest member…..Tucker!

This handsome boy is a Husky/Collie mix and is just 8 months old. He is a sweet and playful pup who is making friends with everyone he meets!

Tucker’s family fell on hard times and couldn’t provide a proper home for him. His family is heartbroken that they could no longer keep him, but they felt they had to do what was best for Tucker. He stayed overnight with one of our volunteers and will make his way to his foster home tonight.

Since he just came in last night, we are getting to know Tucker and will post updates soon!

Callie Visits Her Neurologist

As you may recall, Callie has been on medications for epilepsy for most of her life. In fact, the reason that she joined MaPaw when she was just 10 months old was because her family could not afford to care for her condition. Initially, it was believed that we could get her medications regulated and she would be able to start her search for a furever home. Unfortunately, Callie’s seizures were so severe and so frequent that we felt the best home for her would be the foster home that she was already in. So Callie became a permanent resident of MaPaw!

Callie is such a character and plays nonstop with her foster siblings! If you watch her play, you can see that she has suffered some brain damage from her multiple grand mal seizures.

About a year ago, Callie’s foster Mum decided to take her to a neurologist to make sure that we were doing everything we could for this sweet little gal. From the first time they met Dr. Northington, both Callie and her foster Mum just loved him. Over the past year, Callie’s medications have been tweaked so we can best control her seizures. She still has seizures, but they are not nearly as frequent and severe as they were when she first came to MaPaw.

When Callie visited Dr. Northington on Monday, she got some really exciting news…… He felt that Callie no longer needed all of the medications that she was currently taking, so he took her off one of them.

We are so happy for Miss Callie! While she will always have seizures, we are so grateful that we have been able to control them with Dr. Northington’s help (of course). Way to go Callie!!!
