In Memory of Schatzi

schatziIt is with a very heavy heart and through many tears that we share the passing of MaPaw pup, Schatzi.

Schatzi joined MaPaw 2 years ago after being found on the side of the road by 2 of our volunteers. This beautiful girl was horribly thin ~ you could clearly see every bone in her body. With lots of TLC, Schatzi was soon gaining weight and her wonderful personality started to shine.

On Saturday, she had a seizure and became paralyzed in her hind end. She was taken immediately to emergency. After x-rays and blood work showed no specific cause, the doctors were leaning toward a neurological issue. We agreed to leave her overnight for medications and observation. On Sunday morning, there was still no improvement and she was clearly in pain. Although it broke our hearts, we decided it was time to help Schatzi begin her journey North of the Rainbow Bridge. In the arms of those that loved her most, Schatzi closed her eyes and passed peacefully.

Dearest Schatzi ~ You were our beloved Shepherd with a Husky heart. We are honored to have had the privilege of caring for you and sharing our lives with you for the past 2 years. Wear your silver harness proudly as you dance among the stars, free of pain. You will forever be in our hearts. Until we meet again, dear friend…

Oreo

oreo-mediumAge: 3-1/2 Years
Sex: Male
Size: Large

Congratulations Oreo!!!

Oreo is a 3-1/2 year old Siberian Husky/Native American Indian Dog. Oreo is a gentle giant weighing in at 90 lean pounds. He is wonderful with people and other medium to large dogs. He is housebroken and trustworthy in the house.

True to both breeds, Oreo will roam when given the chance. He easily jumped a half door to explore what was on the other side. Oreo and his brother were accused of going after nearby sheep, but luckily, their names were cleared. During his adventures, he would visit neighborhood kids and dogs, making friends and getting treats. Luckily he was never harmed and was brought home promptly. His family knew his wandering was dangerous for Oreo and want him to be safe in a new secure home.

Oreo was with his family since he was a pup and is a wonderful companion pet. He is a smart boy and enjoys attention. He will need a home with large dog experience and one that is able to keep our big boy safe and sound.

Roxie

Congratulations Roxie!!!

Roxie is a 13-month all white Siberian Husky puppy that is guaranteed to capture your heart! This bi-eyed beauty (one brown eye and one blue eye) is full of energy and curious of everything around her. She is thin, as many young huskies are, and will gradually gain weight with a good nutritious diet.

Roxie loves to play, play, play! She is wonderful with other dogs her size or larger. She can be a little shy at first, but it doesn’t take long for her to come out of her shell! True to her breed, she is a digger and caution is needed to make sure she is in a secure, fenced area to keep her safe and sound.

Roxie is all puppy and is a diamond in the rough. She is learning her basic commands, she knows sit and paw. She is very excited when walked and needs someone patient that will work with her with her leash skills.

A good home for Roxie would be one that has another energetic dog for her to play with and someone that will concentrate on helping her grow and become a wonderful companion. Sibe experience is a plus.

Phoenix

Congratulations Phoenix!!!

Phoenix is a five year old teddy bear of a husky. This sweet boy thinks he is just fluffy, but diet and exercise are already showing a difference. Phoenix was cared for and loved by his family, but life changes forced the family to arrange for Phoenix to find a new home that would also love him.

Phoenix is a very sweet boy that loves people, especially kids. He has lived with five kids, one of which was a toddler that loved to play with Phoenix. He is trustworthy in the house. He was crated for his first year and then he was allowed to have the run of the house.

Phoenix loves walks and is good on a leash after the first five minutes of excitement. He enjoys car rides and plays fetch. He likes to be brushed, playing with his Kong and will sing upon request. He knows sit, lay down, paw and even stay. Phoenix loves everyone he meets!

Lobo

lobo-mediumAge: 5 Years

Congratulations Lobo!!!

Lobo is a handsome, chestnut red Siberian Husky that is about 5 years old. He found his way to us when his family gave him up to a local shelter. Lobo has the Siberian’s high prey drive and it was felt best for him to be placed in rescue with folks that understand the breed.

Lobo is one of the new kids on the block and he isn’t sure what is happening and why he is here. At first he was very shy, however, when everyone was gentle with him and he discovered he was in a good place, he quickly became very loving and playful. Lobo is good with other dogs and plays well with them. He is quickly becoming a favorite among the rescue.

Lobo apparently was kept outdoors, he has fly bites on the tips of his ears where he has lost some hair. This certainly does not take away from his good looks and the hair may grow back now that he will be an indoor dog and part of someone’s family.

Kennel Update

Good evening ~
We have some very exciting news to share about our kennels… they are finally done!!! It has been a long and (sometimes) challenging journey, but the kennels were finished just before Christmas.

It didn’t take long for us to find our first official guest. Lobo is a 5 year old boy that was surrendered to the shelter by his family when they could no longer care for him. He’s a handsome red and white boy with amazing blue eyes. Lobo joined us on December 27th.

lobo

We were worried that Lobo would be lonely in the kennels without any “neighbors”. It turns out that we didn’t need to worry about that for too long…

Phoenix joined us just a few days later. He was brought to us by his human dad when he could no longer care for him. Prior to joining MaPaw, Phoenix had been staying with a family member who apparently fed Phoenix anything he wanted. Phoenix is a bit on the chunky side, but we’re working on getting that extra weight off this sweet 5 year old boy.

Oreo was next to join the kennels. This big guy is a 3-1/2 year old Siberian Husky/Northern American Indian Dog. We had originally been contacted by his owner when Oreo and his canine housemate were accused of going after some sheep. Luckily their names were cleared, but Oreo couldn’t stop his urge to escape and his family felt it best that he be relocated.

Maverick is another new addition to the MaPaw family. He is a gorgeous black and white bi-eyed boy. At just 2 years of age, this poor guy had been bounced around a fair amount in just the few weeks prior to coming to MaPaw. He has settled into his foster home and seems content with his routine.

We are getting to know our newest additions and will soon be adding their bios to the site. Please check back soon to get updates on our new guys!

Good news, all three have been adopted!!

Schatzi is German for “my love” and it is the perfect name for this shy and sweet 11 year old German Shepherd Dog who has been a tragic victim of abuse.

Schatzi was brought in with every bone showing on her frail body. She obviously had seen very hard times and yet when she met us her eyes begged for love and her tail wagged hopefully ~ she immediately captured our hearts. She was given immediate vet care, a warm bed, good food and plenty of TLC.

Schatzi has gained much needed weight and her coat has turned a glossy black. She is an affectionate girl who alerts you to anyone coming to visit. She is laid back and enjoys napping in the sun or inside nearby whoever is home. She is housebroken and trustworthy in the house. Schatzi would be content to be an only dog or a companion with another dog that matches her energy level.

Maverick

Congratulations Maverick!!!

Maverick is a 2 year old black and white Siberian Husky with mischievous blue eyes and a happy-go-lucky smile. This guy still has a lot of puppy in him. Maverick loves fun and games with the other dogs in his foster home. Once game time has ended, he is ready for some quality time with his humans.

Maverick is housebroken and trustworthy in the house. He is crate trained and will sleep and relax in his crate even when it is open. He has a lot of energy at his young age and will need an active companion (human or canine) to get him the exercise he needs.

Maverick has had several homes in his short life and now needs the stability of a forever home that will help him become a wonderful companion and canine citizen. He is a smart boy who has learned basic commands rather quickly.

In Memory of Sage

sage-medium

Sage was originally adopted from MaPaw ten years ago as a year old spunky pup with her whole life in front of her. After being a devoted member of her changing family for the last ten years, she found herself in need of our assistance again.

At 11 years old, Sage would be a bit more difficult to adopt. It wouldn’t be impossible, but she had some medical issues we needed to tend to before she could begin her search. Sage had two large tumors removed from her nose and near her eye. Thankfully, both were determined to be benign. She was also diagnosed with a urinary tract infection, which she was promptly treated for. Her foster family worked with her for incontinence and housebreaking.

During further medical testing, it was discovered that Sage has T-cell Leukemia. Sadly, her prognosis is not great. Without treatment, she would only be with us for two more months. With treatment, we would be able to enjoy her for another year. After being assured that Sage would face minimal side effects from treatment, we chose to start her treatment with the understanding that if she didn’t tolerate it well, it would be discontinued and we would cherish the time we had left with her.

Nov 24, 2013- It is with a very heavy heart that I share the sad news that Sage has
crossed to the Rainbow Bridge. She left this earth peacefully,
surrounded by love.

We adopted 10 month old Sage in September of 2001. Due to life
changes, our sweetie was returned to us September 2012 and was not in
good health.

On Friday she refused to eat, was vomiting and diarrhea and consult
with her vet confirmed it would be a blessing to stop her suffering
and let her go.

God Speed sweet Sage, travel quickly among the stars in your shiny silver harness you so earned. Others are waiting to greet you. Until we meet again…

Our Day with Merck Volunteers

On November 30th, volunteers from Merck chose to spend their Community Day with MaPaw. They were busy bees and a lot of projects got done around the kennel and the Farm.

Some of the volunteers headed to the kennel ~ the fence needed some work and the kennel interior got the first coat of paint. Others went to the barn to organize and make treat bags for our photos with Santa.

When the work was done, the fun started! We brought out some of our lucky pups for some fun with the volunteers. Our pups were brushed and their nails trimmed. Finally, they went for a nice walk around the property. They were all pooped!

Thank you all so much for a wonderful day and all of your hard work!
